So Iceland now has a lesbian prime minister, the first self-identified gay or lesbian head of state… And it’s not raising a ripple of sensationalism in their media. That’s partly because Iceland is extremely progressive on lgbt issues, and partly because everyone has much more important things to be concerned with. I’m glad in a way that it’s not getting much press, because I’d like to think that I live in a world where a gay or lesbian head of state is unremarkable. But I also think that’s symptomatic of US media’s general uninterest in world affairs. And I would like American teenagers in the next few years to have among possible role models a lesbian prime minister who (God willing) pulled her country out of economic disaster.
